What are Shift Types and Job Titles and how do they work?

Shift Types and Job Titles are how Mariana Tools translates time-clock activity in Mariana Tek into the right line items on your payroll. A Shift Type is a category of time-clock shift maintained in Mariana Tek (for example, Front Desk, Cleaner, or Manager-on-Duty); every time-clock entry is associated with one. A Job Title is the label your Payroll Processor uses to identify a specific job an employee holds, each with its own pay rate. The Shift Type Configuration screen is where you map each Shift Type to the Job Title that should be paid for it.

To set this up, sign in and then goto Settings→Manage Shift Types and then click the edit icon. You will see a row for every Shift Type pulled from your Mariana Tek account, with a text field for the Job Title. Enter the Job Title each Shift Type should pay under and save — any field left blank falls back to the default value of Staff. The values you enter must match the job titles on your employees' profiles in your Payroll Processor exactly, including spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Sample shift types and job titles:

Mariana Tek Shift TypePayroll Processor Job Title
Front Desk │ Front Desk Associate
Studio Host │ Front Desk Associate
Opening Shift │ Front Desk Associate
Closing Shift │ Front Desk Associate
Manager on Duty │ Studio Manager
Cleaner │ Cleaner
Maintenance │ Maintenance Tech
Retail Associate │ Retail Associate
Childcare │ Childcare Attendant
Training │ Hourly Staff

When you run a payroll report, Mariana Tools pulls every time-clock shift in the pay period, looks up each shift's Shift Type in your configuration, and tags the hours with the mapped Job Title. The report groups hours per employee and per Job Title — that grouping is what you see on the report and what is sent to your Payroll Processor, where each block of hours is applied to the matching job on the employee's profile. Newly added Shift Types in Mariana Tek will automatically appear on the configuration screen the next time you open it, so it is a good habit to revisit this page whenever your studio adds a new shift category.
